Allergy Shots Q & A

What are allergy shots?

Allergy shots, also known as immunotherapy, are injections of a small amount of an allergen. This treatment approach reduces your sensitivity to an allergen and allows you to live more comfortably.

Allergy shots strengthen your immunity over time, and they continue working even after you finish your treatment.

When might I need allergy shots?

If allergy testing reveals one or more allergies, allergy shots may be the next step in your treatment plan. You might opt for allergy shots because:

  • You have severe allergy symptoms
  • Oral allergy medication isn't effective
  • Oral allergy medication doesn't work with your other medications
  • You don't want to take oral medication

In general, allergy shots are a good solution if you have allergies that cause persistent and disruptive symptoms.

Allergy shots may be particularly effective for indoor allergens, such as dust mites, or outdoor allergens like pollen, as it's hard to completely eliminate exposure to those types of allergens.

What is the process for allergy shots?

Sunshine Allergy and Asthma offers several options for allergy shots, including:

Traditional allergy shots

With traditional allergy shots, you receive shots once or twice a week for 3-6 months. After you reach the effective dose, you transition into allergy shots every 2-4 weeks for 3-5 years. It may take as long as 12 months for significant improvement after you start traditional allergy shots.

Rush allergy shots

With rush allergy shots, you receive shots about every 30 minutes over several hours. You may receive shots for a couple of days in a row. The big benefit of rush allergy shots is that you can enjoy allergy relief in as little as a few weeks.

Cluster allergy shots

Cluster allergy shots occur more frequently than traditional allergy shots but aren't as aggressive as rush shots. Generally, you get 2-3 injections during each office visit, with visits 2-3 times a week. The cluster allergy shot approach can yield allergy relief in 1-2 months.

Dr. Patel specializes in rush and cluster immunotherapy because she understands that fast allergy relief is a priority for most people.
