Eczema Q & A

What is eczema?

Atopic dermatitis, better known as eczema, is a skin disease that usually appears in infancy or early childhood. Eczema causes a number of irritating skin problems, including intense itchiness and dryness.

Experts believe that eczema occurs because of a faulty skin barrier and that both environment and genetics contribute to this condition. Around 50% of people with eczema have asthma, hay fever, or food allergies.

Most children outgrow eczema by age 10-12, although they may continue to experience dry and sensitive skin throughout life.

What are the symptoms of eczema?

Eczema causes symptoms such as:

  • Itchy skin
  • Patches of inflamed red or brownish skin
  • Dry skin
  • Skin scales
  • Thickened areas of skin due to scratching

The location of the eczema rash varies by age. Babies usually develop many small bumps on the face, especially the cheeks.

Children and adults normally develop eczema in skin folds, particularly the backs of the knees and inner elbows. Other common areas for eczema rashes include the backs of the hands and the scalp.

How is eczema diagnosed?

Dr. Patel examines the affected skin carefully and reviews symptoms to diagnose eczema. She may perform skin testing to rule out other skin problems that can mimic eczema, such as poison ivy. Some people with eczema also need allergy and asthma testing.

How is eczema treated?

Eczema management usually includes both medical treatments and lifestyle modifications. Dr. Patel designs an eczema management plan uniquely suited for your situation. Options to control eczema include:

Moisturizer

Keeping your skin moisturized is one of the most effective ways to protect it and encourage healing. Dr. Patel can recommend a high-quality moisturizer that’s safe for your skin.

Avoiding triggers

A variety of substances and circumstances may contribute to or exacerbate eczema flare-ups. Dr. Patel can help you find these triggers and develop strategies to avoid them.

Topical treatments

There are many types of topical treatments for eczema control, including steroids and immunomodulators in cream, lotion, or ointment form.

Allergy shots

Allergy shots can reduce your allergy symptoms and, in some cases, reduce eczema flare-ups.

Wet wrap therapy

Wet wrap therapy involves topical creams, lotions, or ointments and wet bandages to maximize treatment effectiveness.

Dr. Patel may also recommend other eczema management options like oral antihistamines, diluted bleach baths, and vitamin supplements.
